J. J. Cavazos was born March 23, 1889 at Noria Cardenia Ranch in Hidalgo County. Son of Jorge Cavazos Cardenas, a ranchman, and Carmen (Cardenas) Cavazos. He was educated in the public schools, and became a bookkeeper in Falfurrias. He later worked in the wholesale grocery business. At the time of his death he owned the Mission Wholesale Grocery business with twelve employees. He was vice president of the First State Bank & Trust Company, Mission; vice president of the Cotton Belt Gin Company, Edinburg. He had previously served four years as Mission City Commissioner. He owned acres of land and city property. He was a member of the Catholic Church, a fourth degree Knight of Columbus, and a member of the Lion's Club. He married Maria del Refugio Lozano January 9, 1914 in Falfurrias. They had two daughters: Maria Louisa and Maria del Carmen. J. J. Cavazos died in San Antonio December 22, 1930.
